What you get instead is prose that labels emotions rather than earning them. The model has learned that after a tense scene, a character should feel "a wave of relief." So it writes that. Those details require specificity the model won't reach on its own.

1. Emotion naming
"She felt a surge of anger." "A deep sadness washed over him." "Relief flooded through her body." The model names the emotion and moves to the next sentence. A human writer would show you the anger: the jaw tightening, the keys pressed too hard, the reply typed and deleted three times before sending something worse.
2. Telescoping interiority
AI gives you the summary of a thought process rather than the thought process itself. "She considered her options and decided to leave." In human fiction, the consideration is the scene. The back-and-forth, the rationalisation, the moment she nearly stays — that's where the character lives. AI skips to the conclusion because conclusions are more predictable than the messy thinking that precedes them.
3. Uniform emotional temperature
AI prose runs at the same emotional level throughout. Tense scenes and quiet scenes get the same weight, the same sentence length, the same vocabulary density. Human writing shifts gear — short sentences when the heart rate spikes, long sprawling ones when a character is lost in thought, fragments when something breaks. AI stays in third gear.
4. Stage-direction dialogue
Characters in AI fiction speak in perfectly formed sentences that say exactly what they mean. Real people interrupt each other, trail off, say the wrong thing, circle around the point they're afraid to make. AI dialogue is functional — it delivers information. Human dialogue is performative — it reveals character through what people choose to say, avoid saying, and fail to say.
5. Scene-ending summaries
AI closes scenes by restating the emotional takeaway. "As she walked away, she knew nothing would ever be the same." This is the model wrapping up the context window neatly. Human writers end scenes on an image, a line of dialogue, a sensory detail — something concrete that lets the emotion resonate rather than be explained.
The fix: editorial rules at the generation stage
The standard advice — "just edit it afterwards" — is technically correct but practically useless for anyone producing book-length fiction with AI. You can't manually inject emotional depth into twenty chapters. The fixes need to happen during generation, not after it.
